A few days back, I watch the movie Coco, another Pixar masterpiece with a fitting tittle! If you haven’t seen it, you should! It’s beautiful, fun and with multiple layers. Coco is the name of Miguel’s grandmother. Miguel is a 12 yeas old boy, who travels to the land of the dead by accident. There, he seeks the help of his musician grand father, Coco’s husband, to go back to the land of the living and brings back music in the life of his family.
One thing got me thinking a lot. You see, in the land of the dead, which seems so much more fun than the land of the living, there is one catch, you might not expect: the deads die again. They do so when people forget about them. When this happens, they disappear forever.
This is what go me thinking about what will be my legacy to the World?
Look, I don’t think I’m special enough that people should remember me for decades. The question I’m asking isn’t led by vanity, narcissism or else. I just don’t want my life to be summed up by meaningless, petty or worst harmful things. I certainly don’t want my legacy to be a mountain of plastic trash in the ocean.
So what will my legacy be? To be frank, I don’t know yet.
The maps I draw and the other designs I have are pretty cool if you ask me, but not meaningful enough. The other projects I have aren’t going to save the World. Job wise, I held some pretty ‘important positions’ and my name will remain on countless legal documents that will survive me. Yet, this is all kind of pointless in the long run.
Unfortunately, I’m not smart enough to create a flying car, get rid of plastic pollution or solve any World crisis. I’ll have to settle for something less! Well, again, for now I don’t know what it might be! I’d better hurry to find an idea…
There are 2 quotes I found, which I will keep thinking about so I thought I should share with you:
“If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” —Benjamin Franklin
“The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” —William James

So, what about you? What will be your legacy to the World? Who will remember your name in 100 years?
Before commenting if you wish to do so, please note:
Many of you will feel like answering that their legacy are their children. Well ok. Why not… But you have to know, I actually have little admiration for the non-exceptional ability to procreate. I could have a bit more appreciation if you managed to bring up your offspring, so they turned out to be decent humans, but that’s about it. Even if your children are extraordinary, their legacy is not yours. Plus if Coco (the movie, not me) taught you anything, it’s that your offsprings offsprings offsprings… will most likely forget about you anyway. So if you do comment, please find something else than ‘my children’.
I’m not trying to be mean, I’m trying to get meaningful answers or at least answer I will, in my sole opinion, find meaningful.
